I sat down with Lily Klam, First Focus on Children’s Senior Director for Education and Early Childhood Policy, to discuss the astounding array of threats to our nation’s children that we have seen come within the first 100 days of the Trump Administration and 119th Congress.
Since taking office, the Trump Administration has:
Signed an Executive Order calling for the elimination of the Department of Education
Secretary Linda McMahon referred to it as a “historic final mission”
The Department of Education, in conjunction with the DOGE, has initiated staff cuts that would eliminate about half of the department’s employees
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought has said he “gets excited” about making cuts to the Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) — the two departments that provide the bulk of federal investments for our nation’s children
The Administration is also reportedly proposing to abolish Head Start
Congress is considering a budget reconciliation package that would impose up to $230 billion in cuts to education, school meals, and child nutrition programs
That same package might consider a proposal to provide tax credits for private school vouchers
Listen in as Lily and I discuss how these proposals would negatively affect our nation's children.
